Dear Reader,
Welcome to Belladonna, a distinct literary space dedicated to readers of Gothic fiction, Victorian literature, 19th-century classics, and Neo-Victorian historical fiction, providing an extended and enhanced reading experience through individually curated reviews and recommendations.
Arriving at the beginning of every month is a new literary 'experience' based on a specific period and topic. Along with every 'Book of the Month' is a selection of complementary elements to engage with afterwards, namely a period drama, a piece of literary criticism, a piece of cultural/social history and a historical documentary - all chosen in accordance with the monthly read.
Distinguishing Belladonna is its devotion towards choosing formidable writing that intentionally provokes dread, discomfort, rage and resentment in its readers. Here you'll find what the Gothic excels at - necessarily challenging critical tales of mental illness, marginalised identities, moral corruption, cruel realities, and social persecution that are designed to encourage the questioning of established but prejudiced norms.
By joining our community, you become an active contributor to our work of reintroducing underrepresented narratives, normalising difficult conversations and fostering systemic change through relevant literature. We assure your membership will be a rewarding one.
